A Century of Tradition: The Legacy of Memorial Stadium

Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium is more than just a sports venue; it is a monument to the history and resilience of the University of Missouri (Mizzou). The stadium first opened its doors in 1926, dedicated as Memorial Stadium to honor the Mizzou students and alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I. This deep-rooted history established the venue as a place of profound significance and communal memory.

Honoring a Legend: The Naming of Faurot Field

In 1972, the playing surface was officially named Faurot Field to recognize the lasting impact of Don Faurot. A legendary coach and Athletic Director for the Missouri Tigers, Faurot coached the team from 1935 to 1956 and was instrumental in developing the football program and securing the stadium’s future. His contribution—even helping to lay the original sod in 1926—makes his namesake a fitting tribute to his dedication to Mizzou.

The Iconic Rock ‘M’

The most visible symbol of the stadium’s history and tradition is the massive Rock ‘M’ on the hill above the north end zone. Constructed in 1927 by a group of freshmen using leftover limestone from the stadium’s construction, this landmark is repainted and maintained annually by incoming students. It serves as a powerful symbol of school pride, unifying the alumni, students, and fans under the spirit of Mizzou.

Evolution and Modernization

Over the decades, Memorial Stadium has undergone continuous expansion and modernization to keep pace with the growth of college football and Mizzou’s transition into the Southeastern Conference (SEC). These renovations have included the addition of the South End Zone seating, luxury suites, new press boxes, and upgraded concourses. Our ongoing commitment, including the multi-phase Centennial Project, ensures that Faurot Field remains a premier destination in collegiate athletics, blending its historic horseshoe shape with cutting-edge amenities.

Home to the Tigers

Today, Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium stands as the proud home of the Missouri Tigers football team. It serves as a rallying point for the entire Mizzou community, hosting memorable games and record-breaking crowds. Our commitment remains to preserve the venue’s rich past while providing an unparalleled, loud, and exciting game-day atmosphere for every fan.
